If so, you are following a trend that started in the printing industry in 1996 and shows no signs of slowing down until each print manufacturing process is converted to all digital methods.
Since 1997, the installed base of CTP imaging devices has increased 441% while the installed base of film imaging devices has decreased by 32%. By the year 2005 it is projected that the installed base of CTP imaging devices will have increased by 849% over 1997's numbers and the installed base of film imaging devices will have decreased by more than 60%.*
Existence of technology is not enough to cause widespread acceptance and technology must answer a need or address a problem to be considered useful enough to gain acceptance. In other words, there must some benefit to all digital production methods that are driving these trends.
